LOT paintings
Al Svoboda
JANUARY 10 TO FEBRUARY 28, 2026

april april presents four paintings by Al Svoboda in the gallery’s Dining Room.
Each work possesses the same material characteristics: oil and wax on linen, each the same size and same year.
As in a countable noun or a singular parcel, the artist’s LOT paintings refer to allocated space down the street or a collection of personal effects. Recall the “money part” of painting.
Each comprises strips of color dividing planes of color. The paintings are built rather than brushed; they are opaque, though layered, and primarily matte. They use a motif to compose a structure rather than a picture. Motif, here, is a tool in which to create an opportunity for painting that vacations from planning. The aesthetic measure of storage is made ironic in its softening.
